Romania president remembers Ukraine in Easter message

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis spoke about „the victory of life over death and light over darkness,” and in his Easter message on Saturday.

He also recalled the „suffering people who are going through the terrible trials of a ruthless war,” in an apparent reference to Ukrainians who also celebrate Easter at the same time as Romanians.

„The Feast of Holy Easter brings us closer together, to live together the Resurrection of the Lord,” he said in his message a day before Orthodox Easter.

„Wherever we are, we celebrate in communion the victory of life over death and light over darkness, recharging ourselves with hope in the healing power of faith and prayer. In these special days, our thoughts also go to … people who are going through the terrible trials of a ruthless war,” he said.

He added that „the Lord’s resurrection reminds everyone of the Christian call to love of neighbor and the exhortation to live together in peace and good understanding.”

„These are our core values, laid for generations on a foundation of Christian solidarity and spirituality. I wish you all, dear Orthodox, Greek-Catholic, Armenian and Neo-Protestant believers, to receive the Light of the Resurrection and the full joy of the Easter Feast in your soul,” he added.

Western Christians celebrated Easter on March 31 this year, while Orthodox Christians, which includes Ukrainians, mark it five weeks later on Sunday.

Easter and other religious holidays related to it — Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, and Good Friday — are called “ moveable feasts.” This means that they are not fixed dates on the calendar.

These holidays are assigned according to what’s called a lunisolar calendar, which aligns the moon’s phases as well as the sun’s position in the sky.

In 325 at the Council of Nicea, it was established that Easter should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

After the 16th century calendar reform, the vernal equinoxes in the west and east began to be calculated differently.

Catholics decided to switch to calculations that were closer to astronomical ones  and used the Gregorian calendar which usually falls earlier.

Mr. Iohannis is a member of the German-speaking Lutheran church, mainly of the Transylvanian Saxons which celebrated Easter on March 31.
