Camelian Demetrescu’s Vatican tapestry comes to Romania

A tapestry of Romanian artist Camilian Demetrescu’s will be loaned out by the Vatican Palace in order to be exhibited for the first time in Romania, reports Agerpres.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu has announced that it will arrive there at the end of June.

„It is a recovery of an important artist who was born in Romania and worked in Italy. Having created an extraordinary body of work, Camilian Demetrescu is a most interesting artist. It is a privilege for us to be able to put on display, with the assent of the Vatican, this superb tapestry that usually sits in the Apostolic Palace, where His Holiness the Pope receives visits. Also, the artist’s family expressed their joy that one of his works should be donated and remain in the collection of our museum”, said the manager of the Brukenthal National Museum Alexandru Chituta.

The tapestry, borrowed from the Vatican Apostolic Palace, where the Papal audience and diplomatic meetings hall is adorned by several of Camilian Demetrescu’s works, will be showcased at the Sibiu museum alongside other creations of his –  sculptures, paintings, drawings, tapestries, as well as documents.

“Return / Ritorno” in the most important exhibition dedicated to the artist, on the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Besides being an artist, he was a published author of impressive art books and art historian for public radio and television in Romania, before defecting in 1969 to Italy, where he died in 2012.

Hailed as an important artist in Italy, he spent ten years “cleansing himself of social realism” by way of abstract art, later switching to spiritual art of a medieval inspiration after restoring an important church. He is called by art critic Giulio Carlo Argan the fifth great name of Italian art.

His work saw Europe, and he was commissioned by the Vatican to illustrate The Divine Comedy. After the Romanian Revolution, he was involved in a series of ecumenical and spiritual endeavors in Romania.

The exhibition is organized by the Brukenthal National Museum in partnership with Civita Mostre E Musei S.P.A., the Romanian Embassy in Italy and the Demetrescu family.

Exact dates will be announced.
